Browns Ferry Garden is located near Georgetown, SC. The land the nursery is on belonged to Charles Douglas' family. His father raised tobacco on the farm at one time. Thelma Douglas (Charle's mother) loved flowers and in the mid 80's she and Charles began collecting daylilies. His mother encouraged Charles to turn his hobby into a small business, so Browns Ferry Gardens began in 1994. In addition to growing daylilies for sale, Charles soon began to hybridize. Charles Douglas has registered 144 daylilies with AHS and of these cvs : 21 have won the AHS HM (Honorable Mention) award. In 2008 he registered a daylily that he thought was good enough to name in honor of his mother. The cultivar "Thelma Douglas" has won both an AHS HM (Honorable Mention) in 2011 and an AHS AM (Award of Merit) in 2013.
Each year Charles names one cultivar for a South Carolina beach and one cultivar for a South Carolina plantation. Examples: Cresent Beach (2013), Cherry Grove (2012), Myrtle Beach (2011) and Arcadia Plantation (2002), Wedgefield Plantation (2005), and Caledonia Plantation (2008). Browns Ferry ships daylilies all over the US and internationally - to Canada, England, Russia, etc.
Charles and Heidi met though daylilies. Heidi's garden in Cincinnati, OH was on the AHS National Garden tour in 2005. It was a wonderful garden with over 1,100 daylilies and had some fun theme beds. In 2006 Heidi moved (with her daylilies) to South Carolina and 2007 Charles and Heidi were married. That year Charles named a daylily "Yankee Princess" in honor of Heidi. Yankee Princess won an HM in 2013.
Charles is not the only Douglas to hybridize daylilies. Heidi has registered 56 cultivars with AHS. She has named some of her hybrids after the name her grandchildren call her : MeMe. Examples: MeMe's Afterglow (2012), MeMe's Sunshine (2011) and MeMe's Trultii Frultti (2013).One of her best know daylilies is Papa Goose(2011) a UFO named after a goose at the farm. Her cultivar Tip of the Iceberg won an HM in 2014. In 2013 her cultivar I'm Gonna Love You Though It was named to raise funds for several health foundations.
Browns Ferry Garden (Charles and Heidi) have been active supporters of daylilies and of Region 15. The Georgetown Daylily Club usually meets at the Browns Ferry Garden, and Browns Ferry Garden has been on summer meeting tour more than once over the years. Charles Douglas is currently serving as Region 15's AHS Board member and as the AHS Ombudsman. Heidi has served as Youth Liason and both Heidi and Charles are very active in the planning of the 2019 AHS National to be held at Myrtle Beach, SC.
